Thomas Jefferson understood the concept of conformity. If people don't "stand like a rock" in instances that actually matter, their inner sense of what is right or wrong will fade away.

Jefferson knew true genius. Fashion is something that is ever changing, but a strong conscience was a must, is a must, and will be a must

It seems like today it is really easy to "swim with the current" on issues of morality or conscience, rather than standing on a rock. I think it's important for us to remember what Jefferson said.

I think this quote is really important. It is very that we stand strong on things of conscience, things we believe in, things of real importance. Everyday we have to make important conscience decisions where "swimming with the current" just will not work.

Good comments Jaclynn, Jay, Mallory and Shannon!

I agree 100% with this quote. you cannot let others persuade you into doing things that you are not comfortable with or do not agree with. we must stand strong to our morals if we want to be successful. we shape ourselves, we dont let others shape who we are

I love this quote. I think alot of people do the total opposite of what Thomas Jefferson said. They swim against the current, and let their conscience be swayed. This is why some peoples lives are a mess. This also applies to the business world as well. What wonderful advice Thomas Jefferson left us with.

Jefferson seemed to understand that there are certain circumstances where people should follow and where people should be leaders.
It seems like his comments regarding conscience also suggest that people should know who they are and not compromise on that.

Yes, we need to go with the flow sometimes, but there are times we should stand in what we believe in.

I beleive you have to stand like a rock in matters of fashion and conscience. I've seen a lot of fashion flops out there!
"stand like a rock"- being true to self, unwavering in times of difficulty.

It's a question of integrity. If you do not follow your conscience, can you have integrity ... can you be true to yourself and to others? No. If your conscience swims with the current, do you even have one?
As for fashion ... I'm not the one to ask!

A rock will LOOK as though it is moving through the water, when in fact it is stationary and the water in the river is moving past IT.
Sometimes when you are in the right place, and your conscience is telling you what to do, the flow of fashion will try to wash you downstream. Stand fast! Your place will be established forever if you resist the current of those around you, and remain faithful to your calling.

I love this quote. It's simple yet insightful. It's like he's saying blend in just don't bend in. And thank God fashion changes because I wouldn't be caught dead in a pear of bell bottoms!

(Prov 11:1 NIV) The LORD abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight.
So what does this mean? It means that you should be honest in business and in every area of your life. Never violate your integrity, especially not for money. Whatever you compromise to gain, you will wind up losing in the end. So do what’s right, because it’s right, and then seek to do it right – everyday! Walk upright before God and man and you will be able to walk with God with a clear conscience and clean hands. -- Women of Destiny blogspot

I like this quote "In matters of fashion, swim with the current. In matters of conscience, stand like a rock" by Thomas Jefferson. Conscience is a God-given gift. the conscience depends on your core values, beliefs and convictions. When these are based on the Biblical principles, we are blessed to be a blessing. Fashion changes whichever way the wind blows and it has its own beauty, But our conscious cannot be like that, It needs to stand like a rock on the rock of our Salvation. Jesus is our Rock.
