Currently I am teaching a course called Case Studies in Ethics at William Jessup University. Here is the link to an excellent ethics framework developed by the Markkula Center for Applied ethics at Santa Clara University.

There is tremendous need to develop leaders who will align with the organization's code of ethics. Every Organization should have a code of ethics.
Some things we can do to create an ethical environment in our organizations
- Have a code of ethics and list of values for the organization
- The Board should emphasize ethics
- Ethical issues can be discussed in corporate newletter
- Have a separate team for ethics monitoring ( only for large organizations)
- Conduct ethics training
- Measure the code of ethics adoption by every employee
One organization which has implemented a ethics team effectively is Lockheed Martin.

Cyril,
I agree, every organization needs ethics training and higher standards to adhere to. I have worked in the business world for many years and have witnessed that when organizations lack these values they eventually become ancient history.
Sadly, honesty and integrity are not as common place as they once were. It used to be that a person's word and a hand shake was all that was needed and ethics training was an unknown...there was no need for it,as it was just a part of our societal DNA.

I agree, Prof. Cyril, that every organization must have a Code of ethics and standards. I wonder if measuring compliance to such code is already in place - I mean, have the parameters been identified, and the point system equitably distributed, etc?
Another point: I am beginning to enjoy this blogging thing. It's my first time to do so and I am very amused. This is fun and exciting.

Prof. Rayan: I am learning a lot in our Ethics class - especially the case about whistle blowing. I would like to expound more about it in a 3rd world setting - the Philippine bureaucracy. While it is true that the whistle blower faces big risks,it is the greater interest of the public that must be considered because the people pay taxes that are used to finance government projects, i.e. roads and infrastructure.

Cyril:
It is great to see you talk about a subject so important to any organization. Ethics is all about honesty, truth, and transparency. The leader must model ethics if they are going to perform as great leaders.

Values are important. I don't think we should get values and principles mixed up. An organization should have a few guiding values, and many organizational principles that protect those values.

I like the last thought about measuring the code of ethics of each person. Jesus never had a top down type of leadership. He always served others as his way of influencing them. It is a very hard line to lead well. How can we influence values instead of enforcing them?
