Leaders continue to learn throughout their life. We need to learn from our past, from our friends, from our peers, from our mentors, from other leaders, from our authorities. As we learn we need to apply what we learn to become more effective.
Reading books is a good way to learn from the experience of the author. Typically authors put in all they know about a topic as they write books. It is a quick way to learn in a few weeks what the author has garnered over a period of years. We all need the discipline to read books based on our purpose and vision. We choose what we read also.

reading sustains you as a leader. leaders are readers and readers are leaders.

Amen. I hadn't realized the concept that when we read an authors book we were getting the benefit of his/her knowledge with out the actual experience, very good point

I never realized mentors could be people we learn from but never actually meet or know personally. Thank you Cyril!

I learned many years ago from my family that life is continuous learning. I've always told my children and now grandchildren that we should always be learning whether in or out of school. Finding time to read can be a challenge these days yet I appreciate that technology now has books on CD so when reading isn't possible usually listening is, driving in the car.

I used to belong to a "book of the month club." I've read many books on a broad range of subjects. I’ve read books on understanding relationships, biographies of leaders, and salesmanship. Some of the books changed my life and gave me a better understanding of others. The books gave me a richer perspective from which to view the events and relationships in my own life.

As a child reading books took me out of a world of isolation and poverty. My nose was always in a book. I loved exploring new lands and peoples in National geographic. In biography's Like Helen Keller I learned how to master adversity, how to be an over comer. The quality of what I read brought me to higher levels in my life. I am a voracious reader!

Cyril, A leader should never stop learning. If they do,they will have no vision. Leaders should learn from others, while pursuing their vision. Learn from a mentor. Ask questions from people who have more experience than you. A good mentor is priceless. A book written by a successful leader, teaches us many lessons and can help us not to make many mistakes.

This reminds me that listening and learning from my mentors and friends is a good thing, but what more if I actually apply these lessons in my life and just don't allow their wisdom to just be a good thought.

I have found that reading is a gateway for our Spirit to be able to move freely and provide a vision of what we take in. In addition it allows us to understand people that we haven't met as though we have. The experiences of the author can't be our own be it may help us with direction and deposits wisdom to possibly inspire others.

What really stood out for me in this archive was when you said that we could learn in a few weeks what an author learned in years. This is a good way of avoiding bad decisions that maybe somebody else has already experienced and written it in a book.

Absolutely, we all need to push ourselves to branch out into new areas of interest or dig deeper into areas we're all ready researching. Continued learning is like continue process improvement; it's a continuous process not a destination. It's one of the ways in which we continue to grow as individuals in Christ.

Cyril, reading and the internet are two of the best ways I have found to gain wisdom & knowledge in any given area I desire to study. The importance of mentors and our personal life experiences help shape us into theleaders we are ment to be. A leader should never cease to gain new insight and grow in new areas.

I love to read and find that it's true you can gain alot of knowledge from books. I like fiction books as well. One that I recently read is Paulo Coehlo's book the Alchemist. The book is about how our mission on Earth is the way to find "God", meaning happiness, fulfillment, and the ultimate purpose of creation. A boy has a dream that inspires him to go on a long journey where he learns alot about himself and life.

We never stop learning.. The hard part is to apply what we learned.

Reading is my favorite past time. I find books are so valuable for learning. I read several books at a time and there are those purchased still waiting to be read. Living life should be constant self-discovery and implementation of tools learned along the way. Our lives become better and a living example to those around us.

I think that we live in a wonderful information age where gifted and articulate individuals can impart their experiences and perspectives about leadership in a myriad of exciting ways. We have the John Maxwell’s, and the Myles Monroe’s. Or we have the ability thanks to technology to go into the past and access the axioms of Churchill, Gandhi, or even Sun Tzu. But the other night in class I got a chill when Bob Miller summed it up best by quoting Jesus, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind. And love your neighbor as yourself." If we do these with sincerity, someone one day will be quoting our axioms. For if we wholeheartedly submit ourselves to the leading of our Jehovah-Roi we will succeed in leading those around us. Or if we do not operate in love and yield ourselves to our Lord, we can read a library of works and will be ever learning but never coming to the full knowledge of.

Leaders must continueally learn and reading is one of the activities to accomplish that task. There are many great and inspirational authors that can teach us about great leadership. I like John Maxwell and Max Lucado. God's word also teaches up about leadership. We must read, but we must also put into practise what we read.
